I'd bet the south has the north beat in all categories for morality.

Of the 17 states with mortality rates above the national average, 13 are southern and border states. Of the top ten states with the longest longevity, six are in the northeast. Indeed, New York has the fourth lowest mortality rate, whereas Texas has the 17th worst.
