The rapture theory is only 200 years old. The church for the first 1800 years didn’t recognize it. The theory is usually credited to John Darby, but it really was started by the Edward Irving in 1820. SDA ‘s have a few quirks, but when it comes to the second coming they are completely orthodox.
Thanks for making this comment. Although Carson is theologically wrong on Hell, he is right about the ridiculous “Rapture” theology, which is the basis of the Left Behind series. The net effect of premill dispensationalism and Rapture theology has pietism and passivity (”Why polish the brass on the Titanic? We’ll just watch TV and wait to get Rapture because Pastor Billy Bob just told me these are the “End Times””)
might I offer a clarification, in my view, that you are absolutely right that the secret rapture is 200 years old and not Biblically sound, BUT...we do get raptured at Christ’s return as we rise to meet him in the air. The word associated with ‘rise’ is a word they used when an official was coming; you’d go out to meet them and then return with the official.
That’s what happens with us; we return to the new heaven/new earth with Him.
