From Second City Cop, the blog of a Chicago cop:
Anyone have the scoop on this?
About three hours ago, a male in his twenties, apparently of middle eastern descent, walked into the lobby of 024 with a bucket full of an unknown substance stating "this is a gift for your chief". When confronted by officers, he quickly exited the building while leaving the bucket just outside the front door. Officers successfully pursued the suspect who was brought back into the station. The subject stated the bucket was full of water and was a "gift". When Lt's DH and NS of 3rd watch were apprised of the situation, they were overheard saying "I would rather take the chance than cause any media backlash". Lt NS then ordered the officers to write the man parking tickets, release him, and then do an information report. No other units/agencies were notified. Said information report was to be forwarded to the FBI. The bucket of "water" was returned to the subject.

I’m not quite sure I undersand..is this a test run, or what?
there was talk earlier of Brussells police monitoring their water supply - chemicals and suits to deal with them had been stolen from a hospital.
I would hope they’d KEPT the bucket of water to test it!
what idiots!
It’s kind of a raw report. My addendum to the title was prompted by some of the incidents in the comments more than this incident, but posting comments as an article seemed weird. Here is the most alarming comment:
So McNothingtoseehere was all over the news last nite saying there is no terrorist threat to Chicago. Guess no one told him about the middle eastern male that was caught on Soldier Field surveillance cameras filming for 40 minutes with a cell phone in one hand and a video camera in the other inside the colonnades of the stadium. This supposedly happened at 5:30 last Sunday morning and this guy got shots of the entire layout top to bottom. Best part is Soldier Field security tracked him with their surveillance cameras the entire time he was there but didn’t call the police until they tried to confront him and he bolted like a jack rabbit. Hey Supe, grab yourself some popcorn, your sidekick Rahm and watch the video. I hear its unnerving as hell.
In a city the size of Chicago, there are many more crazy people than there are terrorists.
The jihadis are accomplishing a lot just by chatter on the net and on the cell phones. They are diverting resources into chasing down their hints and threats. It has to be done, though. Because if it ceases, then the real hit will be launched on a no longer sufficiently vigilant society.
I think it was more of a “clock boy” incident. They wanted to provoke an over reaction where they could score some political points.
That's true, by a factor of about 100,000.
I remember for a year or three after 9/11 there were constant "terrorist surveillance" reports on FR and elsewhere, but nothing ever seemed to come of them. These were mainly posted by FReepers over-obsessed with "threats". I stopped reading after a while. Expect the THREAT threads to be resurrected soon.
And I find you obvious distrust of Freepers paranoia to be bothersome. That’s’ it! You are on the list.

I would think Chicago was too violent of an environment for jihadi types.
A day or two after 9/11, I was at work as Ass’t to the Head of the Math Dept. at UIC in Chicago. An Iranian grad student in the Dept. also worked part-time for the Dept. Head, handling the Head’s travel itinerary and research talks, conferences, papers, etc.
One of our Department staff members was walking behind this Iranian grad student and a male Arab friend of his outside our building, and she overheard the two of them talking about the Sears Tower (at that time the tallest high rise office building in Chicago) and laughing and (paraphrasing here) saying look at it while it’s still standing, or words to that effect. The staff member was aghast and came to my office to report what happened and wanted to talk to the Head about what she overheard. She spoke to the Head who in turn spoke privately behind closed doors to our Iranian worker about it.
I never found out what the end result of their conversation was from the Head; however, the Iranian grad student continued to work at our Dept. for the Head.
It was disconcerting, to say the least, as I had many interactions with this grad worker, as he worked part-time for my boss, and my office was right next to the Head’s office, behind glass doors. Nothing further came of it, and I got along okay with the grad student, but I always felt uneasy, as he was kind of creepy looking too.
He ended up transferring to Columbia University in NYC, New York. Columbia, I might add, is a hotbed of Muzzie activism, and has a whole bunch of Arab students there. It is a very liberal University. This student was politically active when still in our Department. I’ve often wondered what he is up to now at Columbia. I never trusted him.
