Yep. And if "they" want an advanced sounding excuse, give 'em "multiplication is commutative over real numbers." Then say something about minimization of computational complexity.

I’ve got a boy in 3rd grade. The biggest problem is inconsistency in the worksheets. We’ll get a series with problems like;
Use the repeated-addition strategy to solve: 5x3 = “3+3+3+3+3.”

then we’ll get,
5 x 3 = 3 x 5

It’s very confusing for the kids.

actually it’s a rule....as in commutative
