How is it possible to remember words to songs we haven’t heard in 40 years but we can’t remember someone’s phone number?

People don’t dial phone numbers anymore, they have them programmed.

Also, the addition of 3 digits to every phone number made it considerably more difficult to remember the full number, 3 different prefixes in town (expanding to a 4th)... most phone numbers begin the same. That similarity doesn’t make it any easier. It’s more confusing.
