The popularity of Trump is based on the sudden unleashing of common sense. The Iran 'deal', the clockmaker, Bergdahl, Bengasi, Muslim Brotherhood in the WH, and countless other anomalies are pressure gauges measuring just how beggared our belief has become.
This used to be a nation based on common sense solutions. Today there is no sense. The credos that female impersonators are now 'women', terrorists are frustrated job seekers, homo marriage is legitimate, Illegal aliens help the economy, and the border is secure are all denials of reality. Yet they are cycled again and again as if repetition makes them real.
Simply by stating the obvious, Trump has captured national attention. He isn't a prophet or even particularly insightful. The power he wields is the pent up frustration of the American people. There is a mighty storm coming. It will either destroy us or sweep these bratty elements out to sea.

In talking to the people I associate with (Midwestern suburbanites), there is a common thread about Trump. I will summarize it with what they say, and translate it into what they mean.
What they say:
“Trump is not presidential material, but he’s saying a lot of things that need to be said.”
What they mean:
“America is being destroyed by illegal immigration, and I admire Trump for being able to say what I feel. But I won’t openly say that its immigration or that I would vote for Trump for fear of being labeled a hater.”
That’s how deeply the doctrine of political correctness has worked its way into our national psyche.
