Zumwalt: The Navy's massive, high-tech destroyer is here (pictures) The cutting-edge warship finally enters the water, chockablock with an all-electric integrated power system, an advanced gun system, radar-reflecting angles, and a striking inward-sloping tumblehome hull.

Next-gen Zumwalt-class destroyer General Dynamics Bath Iron Works launched the first of the Navy’s next-generation Zumwalt-class destroyers on Monday at its Bath, Maine, shipyard.

The 610-foot-long ship is chockablock with new technologies including radar reflecting angles, a striking inward-sloping tumblehome hull, an all-electric integrated power system, and an advanced gun system.

Missiles shouldn’t be a problem. Since the superstructure is made out of ‘composite’ (plastic) the missiles should pass straight through without detonating.

ya almost like a type 21 Uboat on steroids. If that railgun really works well, Katy bar the door, this puppy will be the next generation of ship to shore bombardment.

Nor as quickly: it seems to take us about as long to build and try out a new ship as it took us to win the whole Second World war.

I just hope it performs as well as expected-- I didn't close-in defense systems listed in the armament.

I’m sure that is reassuring to the crewman standing directly on the other side other side of the impact area and the rest of the crew.
