If the drought continues at this pace, in 5 years L.A will be a ghost town unless someone comes up with an economical way to make fresh water from the ocean. (I hear desalination plants are very expensive to run and maintain.)

The Israelis have developed the technology so that it's cost-effective, but the watermelons won't ever let it happen here.

Nah, wait a few years...
When I lived in LA the CA “Drought Emergency Office” switched overnight to the state “Emergency Flooding Office” at the end of the late 70’s drought...:^)
