The Continental Congress voted for independence on July 2, 1776. In a letter to his wife dated July 3, John Adams predicted that July 2nd would be celebrated every year as independence day.

Interesting that he was so wrong.. The people only remembered the day it was published, not the day it was adopted.. LOL
