The Top Three Contenders For The U.S. Military’s XM17 Modular Handgun System Contract
Bearing Arms ^ | July 1, 205 | Bob Owens

We’re just a week away from the fourth and final industry day where handgun manufacturers will meet to discuss the U.S. Military’s requirements for the XM17 Modular Handgun System (MHS). The XM17 project winner will be a replacement for the venerable, but now worn-out M9s made by Beretta that have been the nation’s top military pistol for 30 years.

The meeting will take place on July 7-8 at New Jersey’s Picatinny Arsenal.

The winner of the MHS contract is expected to be awarded the contract for roughly 280,000 full-size handguns for the Army, more than 200,000 for the Navy, Air Force, and Marines, and perhaps as many as 10,000 compact variants for concealed carry by military and DoD civilain law enforcement and clandestine special operations use.

While numerous companies will be vying for the lucrative contract, it’s going to be very tough for companies to meet the demands of the contract, which are designed to obtain the best handgun possible based upon new advances in the field of combat human factors and anthropomorphic research.

Official requirements for the XM17 program include:

non-caliber specific

modular grips

grip that accepts a wide-range of hand-sizes (5th to 95th percentile)

ability to accept different fire-control devices/action types

ability to accept various magazine sizes

suppressor compatible

ability to mount “target enablers” (lights, lasers, etc) on a picatinny rail

match-grade accuracy (90% or better chance 4″ circle at 50 meters) low felt recoil impulse

You may be surprised at the top contenders… and at which popular companies don’t come close to making the cut.

STI-Detonics STX

Who?

Neither Detonics Defense nor STI are household names, nor are they even particularly well-known among other gun companies. Detonics Defense is primarily a research and development “skunkworks” focused creating designs and patents around combat...

Full power 10 mm.

180 grains at 1400 fps.

Shoots flatter, hits harder and double stack mags fit in a grip the average person can fit their mit around.

Col. Jeff Cooper would even agree.

In a polymer gun, it’s even pleasant to shoot.

This is shaping up to be the f-35 of handguns, potentially.

I shot a 10mm Colt government model (dad’s gun), wasn’t impressed. The biggest smile I ever put on dad’s face was when I rocked the range with a Charter arms .44 special bulldog. I had uncanny skills with that gun, lol.

Cant wait to see the F-35 of handguns. A smooth 1911 or Glock or model 19 revolver will put this new thing to shame in speed, accuracy, and dependability.

Mark my words.

We can only hope it doesn’t turn out to be how bad the f35 program became.

ok, it appears to be either single action or striker fired since there's no de-cocking lever or slide safety though the notch is there, and no visible hammer, then why the beaver tail????

strange animal

Sig P320 can use 4 calibers, different size barrels of different size frame. I use the trigger module from Carry size and 9mm carry size barrel in compact grip.

Shoots like a Sig, doesn’t have feed, ejection or any ammo sensitivity. Good Striker trigger with short reset you can hear and feel.

A Dandy.

Probably dao with a 15 lb trigger for “safety” at the cost of accuracy.

Yea except for the ones to be used on American citizens.
Those will have hollow points.

15lbs? No way, the women and LGBT soldiers will never be able to fire that.

I bought a Glock 20 for a trail gun, it ended up being my second favorite range gun. Pleasant to shoot and remarkably easy to keep on target.

I wouldn’t want to shoot 10mm from a GM either, my hands get beat up just shooting standard 45 auto rounds from mine.

I don’t know, as an engineering designer most of my life, I’m not fond of anything made of plastic. Even today, I can tear down a colt 1911 without even thinking about it. The recent church killing of nine people is indicative of the caliber, not the shooters skills.

I qualified with the 1911 but always hated it. To this day there is no 1911 in my inventory at the bottom of the lake.
