It's a ubiquitous symbol used on all sorts signage ranging from restaurants, plumbing companies, even campaign signs. If you start looking for it, you'll see it everywhere. Macy's is only the most egregious example.

Macy’s adopted the red star in 1858. It symbolized the founder’s history as a sailor.
The Communists didn’t adopt it until 1917 or so.
