Pelosi demands highway funding bill in return for trade support
Washington Examiner ^ | June 12, 2015 | Pete Kasperowicz

Just hours after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., helped sink President Obama's trade agenda, she indicated that more Democrats might be willing to support trade if Congress passed a long-term highway funding bill.

"The overwhelming vote today is a clear indication that it's time for Republicans to sit down with Democrats to negotiate a trade promotion authority bill that is a better deal for the American people," Pelosi said in a statement.

"The prospects for passage of a such a bill will greatly increase with the passage of a robust highway bill," she added.

Democrats have been demanding a long-term highway bill for the last several months, but it's unlikely that Republicans would do that favor for her just to secure more votes on trade. Most importantly, Republicans are split on how to find funding for a highway bill.

Anyone know why the highway bill is so damn important to the Democrats?

Crony contractor’s contracts? Crony Union contracts?

They’re talking about Obama’s $478 Billion (!!!) highway bill loaded up with billions in goodies for the unions who dutifully kick back in large measure to the Democrats (and some Republicans).

Ok, thanks. I was more concerned about them selling off the Interstates and letting states put up toll booths everywhere - but I suspect that is more of a desire of Republicans.

Interesting you mention that. The trade agreements in question reportedly push the privatization of public assets.

Interesting...and not surprising. Hopefully this who thing simply blows up and we’re through.

If 3 month extensions to highway spending is all we get for the next 10 years, and states aren’t able to plan “grand projects” with federal funding (crap like trains, carpool lanes, and bike lanes), perhaps they’ll fix their existing highways and bridges instead. In Texas we’re finally spending what we need to for large projects at the STATE level, and without strings. We’ll take the federal goodies, just for the smaller stuff.
