Iwabuchi came on after 72 minutes and finally got the breakthrough three minutes from time in a game Japan dominated.

How good is Germany's women's team?
Only the best. Or — at least — that No. 1 ranking is bestowed upon Germany by the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. And that isn't new territory for the German women's team. Since FIFA world rankings started, The National Eleven has never ranked worse than No. 3. Their sterling tournament resume speaks to that long run of dominance. Germany, having qualified for all seven Women's World Cups, has a 27-4-6 win-draw-loss record in the tournament. Their two titles (2003, 2007) tie the USA for most all-time. And beyond the Cup, the German squad can also boast three Olympic bronze medals and eight UEFA European Championships.

Late goal sends Japan past Australia into semifinals
Japan is a perfect 5-0 in Canada, and has won eight straight since winning the 2011 tournament in Germany, when it beat the United Stated 2-2 in penalty kicks in the championship game. The Nedeshiko are now two victories from becoming the second nation to win consecutive tournaments after Germany won in 2003 and '07.

England boots host nation Canada from tournament with 2-1 win
"The dream is over,” Coach John Herdman said following the game. “Gutted, gutted for all of Canada. Christine (Sinclair) said sorry, but she can’t say that.

"Those fans showed people around the world how to support women’s football."

There was evidence of tears on the faces of every Canadian player as they streamed out of the locker room over 90 minutes after Saturday's 2-1 loss to England in the quarterfinals at the Women's World Cup, but none wore a more pained facial expression than Christine Sinclair.

Speaking after the Matildas bowed out of an impressive World Cup, Stajcic admitted the better team progressed to the semi-final.
"Today I thought the better team won. They kept the ball and had a lot more patience and technique than us, especially in the first 20 minutes of the match, and I think we expended a lot of energy chasing the ball during that period," Stajcic said.

"Even though they scored from a set piece and a scrappy sort of goal they were probably better at more aspects of the game than we were."
