Named counter-electronics high-powered microwave advanced missile. Weapon destroys electronic systems without hurting people or buildings. Champ is now an 'operational system already in [the] tactical air force.' Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range has been chosen as the delivery vehicle.
From Ocean's Eleven to Star Trek, weapons that wipe out enemy electronics are a staple of science fiction films.
For years, scientists have been attempting to create such a weapon as part of Champ, or the Counter-electronics High-powered microwave Advanced Missile Project.
Now, the US Air Force claims it has advanced the technology, and says it can deploy it using the stealthy Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM).

For years, scientists have been attempting to turn fantasy into reality by working on a system known as Champ, or Counter-electronics High-powered microwave Advanced Missile Project HOW DOES IT WORK?
The missile is equipped with an electromagnetic pulse cannon.
This uses a super-powerful microwave oven to generate a concentrated beam of energy.

Great. Now we can give it to the Iraqis, who will run away and leave it for ISIS.
Naw, I heard that actually fielding this weapons is and has been very controversial for a long time.
Nice design but I don’t think they will soon use it.
I think the feeling is it’s use would strongly push others to do the same against the USA, but on a NATIONAL basis, and we’re considerably more vulnerable to EMP....
I think this is a proven DESIGN only, right now.
We can zap Yemen back into the stone age.
...oh wait.
How long until BamBam hands it over to ISIS?
EXACTLY the reasoning. Imagine using it, say, against Afghanistan: what % of the population would even NOTICE...?
Even Iran, much more advanced, is still quite primitive in comparison to the USA.
I heard this is a proven design, but the impression the article given is we have these manufactured, fielded, and all personnel trained up right now.
It COULD have been that way, even 10 years ago, but my understanding is that there has been a huge, huge debate about all this, and for political and strategic reasons, e.g., the USA would swiftly suffer numerous copycat attacks, or even a huge EMP blast in the stratosphere...
Functional kill is COOL as hel*, but, ehhh.....
Naw, they don't have these ready.
Oh, and I am just SURE that frying a building with 1000’s of joules of microwave energy will do N*O*T*H*I*N*G to anyone’s eyeballs.
Cookin’ with gas. Good as long as the supply holds up. Probably more reliable than the electric company.
TO #11: I was rooting for the Gorn. Would have made Star Trek more interesting.
Gorn to Sulu: “Warp 7, Sulu”.
Sulu to Gorn: “Yes, Captain!”
Maser? (microwave amplification)

From UK Daily Mail news report.
Perhaps some bluster... but I don’t see obama doing squat over those islands. Obama would take it to the UN.
If it destroyed enemy’s wouldn’t it also destroy our own.
ba da bing.
