Last week The Ryersonian reported on an incident that involved two first-year journalism students who were turned away from an event organized by Racialized Students' Collective because they are white. Since then there has been a lot of commentary on the piece and a lot of debate -- a lot of the criticism is valid.
There are two sides to the story: 1) the media has a right to attend public events and report on matters that are in the public interest. The student media needs to cover initiatives that are happening on campus so that we draw attention to them and in turn create awareness (The Ryersonian reported that one student said he was covering the meeting for an assignment). 2) Marginalized groups have a right to claim spaces in the public realm where they can share stories about the discrimination they have faced without judgment and intrusion from anyone else.
I am a person of colour and a journalist and so there are two conflicting voices inside my head. But in this case one voice, that of a person of colour, is louder and my conscience does not allow me to be impartial. I have to take a side.
The organizers of the event, the Racialized Students' Collective, should have done a better job of labelling this event as a safe space on the Ryerson Students' Union online calendar. They should label safe spaces clearly and maybe even host events that educate the public on what they mean. Doing so will help the public and the media have a better understanding of the purpose and value of these spaces.
However, the point to note is not that two white students were asked to leave the event...

I agree and any who find America not safe I hear Ethiopia is nice...
pure racism
Minorities fought(and still fight)for equality, yet seem to want separation.Very illogical
This is total microaggression against whites.
It’s called Liberia.
Well then...I need a safe place away from uppity minorities.
When white people choose to separate themselves from (ugh) "people of color" like Ms. Ansari, they are, of course, racist. I hope that little lesson in logic doesn't cause people to lose too many brain cells. (snicker)
Good. They can have them as long as we can have spaces without persons of color.
OK then lets ship them back to thier points of origin
After all of the sins of the people were symbolically transferred onto the scapegoat it was further burdened with all marks of reproach, imprecations, and hate. After this the people prayed that all those evils which were due to themselves might fall upon the goat rather than on the sinners themselves even though scapegoating cannot clean a dirty conscience.
A dirty conscience, selfishness, self-indulgence, envy, covetousness and pride hinders and blinds the soul's vision of itself as it really is. Thus Truth and the revelation of its' own sin,
"...causes what it was trying to avoid seeing to be set before its eyes. What it had preferred to be hidden behind its back is now brought round and it is forced to confront it face to face." Formerly it had "looked at itself and been very pleased with itself and become a lover of its power. It had lost the ability to look honestly at its own actions and thus justified all its evil deeds. Through its selfishness and self-indulgence it became insolent (and) proud..." (St. Augustine, Sermon 142,3)
As it is throughout the Middle East where a victim of rape can be stoned to death by her rapist, here in America we witness the rapid rise of a scapegoating society because a majority of "sinless" Americans (a consensus) within and without the Christian Church reject the eternally unchanging Truth and Moral Law of the Triune God in favor of their own sovereign, yet morally relative "sacred opinions" "feelings" and "choices." Thus they refuse to accept personal responsibility for their own sins but rather freely scapegoat other people who they unjustly accuse of hate, homophobia, racism, sexism, intolerance, hate speech, fear-mongering, and mental illness. Thus people of color scapegoat white people, homosexuals scapegoat "hateful homophobic" straight males and females, pedophiles scapegoat parents trying to protect their own children from perverts, haters of truth (liars) scapegoat the truthful, the indecent scapegoat the decent, the cowardly scapegoat the courageous, the envious crucify the human objects of their envy; thieves, rioters and murderers scapegoat society, and sinful self-indulgent unfaithful Christian compromisers scapegoat faithful Christians.
Where a majority are not guilty of their own evils, scapegoats are necessary. Human scapegoats will be burdened with the evils of the guilty and crucified on the altars of the self-centered, self-indulgent, and proud. Scripture calls this idolatry.
(Didn’t read the whole article)
Which “Ethnic Minorities” demand that Safe Space from white people?
You really don’t see that from Little Saigon or Little Tokyo. Ethnic minorities may congregate more towards one and another, but not to the point of excluding “others”.
I HATE it, when these ‘colored race hustlers’ using the plurals.
There is that.
But unlikely, unfortunately.
Okay...but do “white people” deserve safe spaces away from ethnic minorities?
The hazards of adopting Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton as "leaders."
Yep! A safe place to peddle crack cocaine, meth, pot, heroin and working girls. A guy’s gotta make a living.
It’s come full circle, from segregation imposed by the Demoncrat party to self imposed segregation by members of the Demoncrat party.
Great idea. They can just emigrate to a country where everyone is just like them.
Me too. Why is the phrase "person of color" OK, but "colored person" is racist?
