School voucher proponents pull out boxing gloves, welcome Scott Walker

NEW ORLEANS — The American Federation for Children, which wants a dramatic expansion of charter schools and voucher programs, picked a boxing theme for its annual policy summit this week.

Red boxing gloves became table centerpieces at the opening lunch Monday. Panel titles included "Knocking out yesterday's education models" and "Training parents to win the fight." And the first keynote speaker was Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a likely Republican presidential contender who is best known for aggressively fighting and weakening his state's education labor unions.....

....Wisconsin is home to the nation's first modern voucher system. The state adopted legislation in 1989 that allowed some low-income students in Milwaukee to use state money at a private school. The program has expanded since then, and Walker has called for a statewide program that would be open to most if not all students, regardless of their family income or where they live. Lawmakers in Madison have been slow to embrace this proposal, which critics argue would divert money away from public school systems and to private or religious institutions with fewer accountability measures.

Walker also talked up how teachers unions in Wisconsin now have much less power, which he said has allowed school systems to more easily hire and fire teachers and save money on health insurance plans. And he called for federal authorities to give more decision-making authority to local school districts and parents. Toward the end of his speech, Walker said that increasing school choices "isn't a red issue or a blue issue, this is a red, white and blue issue."....

Gov. Walker Proposes Bold Education Budget

"Governor Scott Walker did not shy away from educational reforms in his 2015 State Budget Address. The second-term administration proposed sweeping changes that included a statewide school voucher program, A-F grades for all publicly funded schools, the creation of a statewide independent charter school authorizer, and a $141.9 million per-pupil funding supplement in 2016-17.

That's a lot to process, so let's just get down to brass tacks. Here are the major reforms that Gov. Walker unveiled in his 2015 Budget Address:

FFRF Launches Ad Campaign Targeting Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s Expanded School Voucher Program "Among Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker‘s litany of faults is his decision to support vouchers that would ultimately use taxpayer money to fund religious schools.

Before his budget [Source: "Think Progress"] is approved by state legislators, the Freedom From Religion Foundation is launching an ad campaign warning people about the voucher problem specifically.

There’s this billboard that will go up in downtown Madison later this month:

I love it! It is now becoming more and more clear that the public schools are the allies of the atheists and are enemies of Judeo-Christian religions.

A good first step toward getting our country back, is to get control of the schools back from the teacher’s unions and the federal Dept of Education.

Vouchers: The amount state governments pay for students to go to private school is a fraction of the money that is spent per student in failing public schools.

Example in florida Schools $4800 or thereabouts for a secondary student voucher to a private school or charter school.

The State spends about $20,000 per student including the cost of the 70 million dollar average High School Campus. Herein lies the complete financial inequity of school vouchers.

Education consumes over 50% of all states' budgets. Next add in the Federal $$$ and all the dictates that come with them.
