I knew high achieving, patriotic blacks in the military. Let me tell you, they were completely frustrated and outraged by members of the family or previous friends they encountered when they went home on leave, attended family reunions, or met for holiday events. I heard story after story. Also, when the military member would use proper grammar and demonstrate manners, they said they were jumped on by members of their own family. They said the most common attack was "You think you better than me!?"

You beat me to it. My thoughts exactly, because I saw (and experienced) the same thing.

My little town has one black family. The oldest son actually wants to be a farmer and knows how much work it is after working on local farms during the summers.

It is entirely likely that the military member in each case would be entirely correct in so thinking.

The proper response to that question of “YOU THINK YOU BETTER THAN ME?” is; of course I do, and YES I AM!
