Corey Winchester, an African American educator who went to Northwestern University to get his college degree, experienced a microagression this week on campus and, as a result, decided that he must stand against the racism he sees there.
He detailed what happened in a letter written to the colleges newspaper, The Daily Northwestern. The piece is titled, Northwestern, check your damn privilege.
Mr. Winchester now works at Evanston Township High School and is working with the group SOAR (Students Organized Against Racism). According to Mr. Winchester, he and the group of students traveled to Northwestern for a conference; after it was finished, they went to buy lunch on campus.
Then, a privileged White, able-bodied, male went to get food; Mr. Winchester believes that the student cut in front of the line. When asked to move, the student said that since he went to school there and was on a short schedule, he had the right to get food in front of Mr. Winchesters students. Im not moving. I have class and I am entitled to be here, the student said.
Mr. Winchester declared this action was racist, classist, and sexist. He also said that Northwestern was at fault for the sentiments displayed by the students, declaring the behavior and language of the privileged continues to sustain systems of oppression at NU.
