BTW if you have a pc that is slow, the mouse is jerky, you click on a link or file and nothing happens.
Uninstall Google Chrome!
Once I did and restarted the pc, the pc was back to normal.
I had installed the Google Chromecast app so I could send to the tv what I was seeing on the pc such as a movie or tv show. That part worked ok but I noticed how slow everything got. I checked task manager and saw chrome there and saw it disappear when I closed Chrome BUT there must have been something else that was running. I had even restarted the pc with no affect. I wasn’t until I uninstalled Chrome did the pc get back to normal.
Java apps are a different thing.
It could be a addon you have causing the issue and not necessarily java or javascript. You can start Firefox in safe mode to find out.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while starting Firefox.
There is also the link for: Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems
I know you got it fixed, but you may want to look into PaleMoon. It’s a Firefox-based browser, but it strips out most of the bloat and extra stuff you don’t need. Works with most, if not all, of the Firefox addons and extensions. You can also import all your bookmarks and settings from Firefox.
