Would You Discuss Race With Your Starbucks Barista?

Starbucks just announced a new campaign inviting their customers to discuss race relations with baristas. The Seattle-based coffee company is asking employees to write “Race Together” on the side of customers’ cups, in an effort to engage them to discuss…well, their ethnicity. The campaign was sparked by the recent uptick in nationally-covered racially-charged tragedies, according to a Starbucks press release.

“What if we were to write ‘Race Together’ on every Starbucks cup, and that facilitated a conversation between you and our customers?” Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz says in a video message to partners. “And what if our customers as a result of that had a renewed level of understanding and sensitivity about the issue, and they themselves would spread that to their own sphere of influence?”

Just got back from a campus Starbucks. Their CEO is an idiot. Trust me, the very last thing these hustling kids want to do is start an extended conversation with strangers on a topic they don’t understand themselves.

can’t be slower than ANY Burger King drive thru at any time of day. You could order 1 item and you will be waiting 5-7 minutes compared to under a minute from McDonalds.

OH! I haven’t gone to a BK in years - can’t eat there. Ugh.

But, we were somewhere the other night and were thinking they could take a lesson from McD’s on how to get people through a drive thru... can’t remember.

Here's a news story about a man punching a woman for cutting him off in the McD's 2 lane drive thru.

Actually surprised this isn’t happening multiple times per day at several locations across the country. It seems like every time I go through their drive thru lane there is always an incident of people getting cut off or dumb people not moving ahead when it is their turn to move up...

RE:”Yeah. We can have THAT discussion; Me and some empty-headed little suburbanite 20-something that still lives in Mom’s basement, and is going to lecture me on “White Privilege”.

I just did a google to find out where the nearest SBs is to my home, I never noticed it.

A few hundred feet from it is a McDonalds, if I had to buy coffee rather than make it I would go there.

A bit farther is a Safeways where I sometimes show that has a SBs, never bought coffee (anything) there either.

Its overpriced and doesn't even taste good. A couple of years ago on a work drive trip mydriver coworker stopped at one and I got a coffee, yuk.
