The only slow down I ever experience these days is with web pages full of Flash objects (TheBlaze.com, for instance). If I have a window or two like this open, it will sometimes make my computer crawl. [Windows 7 64-bit, FF browser, Comcast cable service].
Add in NoScript. Then run the Flash that YOU want, not what they want.
