Am looking for a new used car and have heard no valid arguments against a 5 year old BMW 5 Series w/50,000 miles.
Please suggest and advise.
If you know a car repair shop that will work on them reasonably, why not? If not, then don’t. Parts are still very expensive though.
Even a comparable Audi might be less trouble. Another alternative, if you’ve got a high tolerance for repairs, Jaguar XF is sex on wheels for the price.
Those are only good for about 30,000 miles. After that, you’d better be married to a factory certified BMW mechanic. /s
A 5 year old w/50K miles should be fine (check the maintenance records). Around 100K miles my BMW started to need replacement parts: alternator, fuel pump, etc. Brake pads and drums need replacement every 40K or so. It really depends on your driving style and city vs. highway driving. I am still driving on my original clutch after 140K, but I do a lot of highway driving. If you are good with a wrench, the cost is considerably less. These cars are complicated and not easily maintained by an amateur, but I have found a great mechanic (not with a dealer) who does great work at a reasonable price. I save my BMW for the weekends. They really are the “Ultimate driving machine” in my opinion, and definitely worth the cost.
