Glad to hear your Dad got off Corregidor and wasn’t taken prisoner. My Dad was in China-India-Burma Theater of War. He had to eat monkey meat a couple of times when the Japs were chasing them.

By the time Dad had hit Corrigidor he had 6 yrs in and was discharged. He and a PFC climbed a telegraph pole and put our Flag back up under sniper fire. Both got Bronze Stars. the first Flag up went to Mac. Then another was put up. 2 weeks later they had a ‘official’ ceremony where the Flag was put on a standard flag pole. There are books with photos of the first Flag raising. Some controversy where it is today.
My BIL served under Merrill from the start clear to Myitkyina air base battle. He came home with a real bad case of PSTD and was a down right a mean drunk.
