We never thought we would have tens of millions of Gibsmedats, either, willing to murder and pillage their neighbors like Muslims hordes if they got their "free" money and food cards cut off.

I think in the 50s-60s we might also have been very vulnerable to a grid-down disaster, but we only saw it post nuclear war. But in that era, Americans had a very self-reliant attitude. Today, the grid has become our exposed jugular vein, we have become invalids, and the world is full of angry punks with straight razors looking at that pulsing vein.
