...and the great thing about liberty is that we are all free to live in a non HOA property or an HOA property. I have had an HOA in one of the last three homes I’ve lived in - and we were pretty lucky. Not too bad, but I’ve heard horror stories.

I am in my second HOA. Both very pleasurable experiences.
I have lived on many Navy bases where it is sorta an HOA. So now that I retired, I seek them out. I like them a lot. They keep the areas very fine tuned and run well. Sure I am going to paint my home soon and had to ensure that I had a month prior to paint in order to get the HOA ok but big deal. Nobody goes and just buys a can of paint and starts that day anyway. As far as the lawn goes....sure it must be kept well but who wouldn’t want to keep their largest and most important investment up to high standards. My home in Arnold Maryland is being rented out but when I put it up for rent, it went in like hours and I think the HOA was part of why it rented so fast and why I was able to ask for rent on the high end. It is worth it overall if you care about your living conditions. We are in Florida living in a gated HOA community and when I go into regular neighborhoods, I feel for them.....so many homes that are run down and falling apart with grass that is weed covered or dead grass in many cases. But in our free country it is too each their own.
