Choice of Ernst about personality, not policy.
Congressional correspondent Luke Russert said on MSNBC Tuesday that freshman Sen. Joni Ernst was a pig farmer this time last year and marveled that she is now she is giving the rebuttal to the presidents State of the Union address. That is an extraordinary rise in politics right there, Russert told Joy Ann Reid.
Russert said that Ernst is emblematic of what the GOP wants to be. That is what youll see her do tonight, sell her personality as a war veteran and somebody who was a pig farmer around this time last year and now giving the rebuttal to the president.
In a campaign ad last year Ernst said that she grew up castrating pigs on an Iowa farm. In addition to being the freshman senator from Iowa, Ernst serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard, commanding the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Camp Dodge, and has 21 years of military service under her belt. This time last year she was a member of the Iowa state Senate, where she had served since 2011. Prior to that she was a two-term county auditor.
Russert said that the selection of Ernst has a lot more to do with personality than with policy. One thing Mitch McConnell said around the Christmas holiday, he doesnt want Republicans to be made out to be the bad guys in the room. He is working hard to change the face of how they are being interpreted by Americans. The selection of Ernst is his attempt to do that. I expect it to be about personality and Republican themes and not specifics to the presidents speech.
We'd all be better off today if they'd shot Wickard and sent Filburn to Congress.
And the Rats claim to be the party of the “little guy”. This is at least the 2nd one today making fun of her because she grew up with modest means and is a pig farmer.
Well I have known a number of farmers in my day that I considered honorable and, in their own way, very wise. . . certainly having much more sense than leftist mouth pieces. I knew one who lost an arm in WWII, another that was a guard at the Nuremberg trials, and still another that was shot to pieces in an ambush in Korea . . . real, honorable men who defended the lives and rights of these dirtbags to walk around and spew their idiotic opinions.
Better to raise pigs for income and food than to actually BE an elitist “pig”.
I don’t know if Russert is trying to be insulting here. He’s just speaking Beltway — focusing on the optics and how the GOP is trying to “look average” — rather than the substance of what Ernst said. That’s the problem with all these talking heads. They constantly talk about the “horse race” aspect of these events. Who is up and who is down. What are the optics. Who has the better theme and storyline. But they don’t talk substance. Russert is just another airhead Beltway reporter who has no idea what he just heard.
Tim Russert was worm food around this time last year.
better a pig farmer than a Pig F***er like the MSM.
Just my opinion.
Didn’t inherit his dad’s class, for sure.
You referencing Keith Olbermann or is there another one?
What's his point?
Whereas this snot-nosed kid got his nice job because his father was a member of the Democrat media elite. Some people earn their jobs on their own.
Olberman and Russert
Good one RckyRaCoCo! Better to be a pig FARMER than just a pig....
For that matter better to be a pig farmer than a politician. I look at it like she stepped down in prestige for the service of her country...
At least that is an honest job. And much better than a corrupt and lying media pimp.
...and he was a wet-behind-the-ears pimply teenager with a terrible haircut who got a nepotistic job because his father dropped dead. What a narrative, to use Washington-ease.
I think Luke meant these things to be a compliment.
Yes, why did she ever lower herself by joining the U.S. Senate?
She was also defending his freedom to say what he says.
I’d like to see Russert try his hand at pig farming. It ain’t as easy as a soft useless yuppy word spinner might think.
“The fruit fell, FAR, FAR from the tree.”
That is for sure, and this time last year, Luke Russert was just as pandering as he is today.

Now if she can only use that skill on some of the pork that
comes
out of Congress she’ll be providing a much needed service.

I’m hoping she kept a few pair to give to republican leaders.
