Well, not stomped. But for the candidacy of George Wallace, Humphrey would have won the presidency. Nixon only won by about 43% to 42%. And the rats kept control of both houses of Congress.
Nevertheless you are right that there was a backlash against the democrats, by moderate liberals who disliked Chicago's police tactics, and among others (later to be known as Reagan democrats) who saw the rat party as catering to the hard left. Without the Chicago riots, even with Wallace in the race, Humphrey would have won.
