And one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush upon you. The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident...collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything has changed and changed completely under your nose.
The world you live in - your nation, your people - is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the holidays. But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed.
Now you life in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves; when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed.
And this is how it happens. The form is embraced rather than the spirit. The past is worshiped along with the idea, and people and reality become casualties in the process. And, as the author aptly notes, this isnt a German problem, it is a human problem. This isnt them. Its us. Its me, and its you.

NO. You do not understand me. AT ALL. Neither do you understand the lesson given in the subject matter of this thread and the OP excerpt that started it.
You have Ted Cruz stuck in your brain as your personal and national savior.
You are a case-in-point study of exactly what Milton Mayer discovered by interviewing average Germans who lived in a fundamentally transformed nation of National Socialists; clueless seig-heiling useful idiots who thought they were free living under a tyranny.
You are just like they were.
You forget what the establishment fears mostthe people.
Riiight. All the evidence of the Ruling Class Establishment's lack of fear of We the people, all the outright indifference, bitter defiance and total support of Obama's tyranny in our face - and you come up with that glittering jewel example of colossal gross imbecility.
Congratulations on demonstrating a current living example of exactly what Milton Mayer discovered about the German people in the 30's and 40's; clueless.
You have no authority to lecture me or anyone else about the spirit of liberty.
You are already comfortable as a slave hanging onto false hope and empty bravado with nary a clue of what time it is, where you stand or the reality of our situation.
You are not someone I would want on the battlefield in defense of liberty that is for damned sure.
I really didn’t want to upset you, if that’s what’s going on here.
How about this. What specific and concrete advice would you offer to someone like me regarding how to respond to the problem?
Actually, the one factor that controls how government behaves is their constant and unrelenting fear of the people.
If they had no such fear, there would be no restraint in their actions. Do you understand how such a scenario would look?
Wake up and see reality. You are stuck in a delusion, ignoring what those in power are already doing with impunity and arrogance.
They have no fear of We The People, or they would not have done what they are currently doing.
But I suspect you are comfortable with it. You'll justify it and tell yourself you are free, and that the government fears the people. Same as the Germans did under their fundamental transformation from 1933-45.
Why doesn’t Obama release his college records, or records from any other part of his history? Why does he have to talk like he’s working to help our country when he’s doing the opposite?
Why did Obama hire Gruber to lie for him? Why couldn’t he just come out and say Obamacare is not really about healthcare but about redistribution of wealth?
Why does Boehner not admit what he’s doing behind closed doors? Why is Thad Cochran such a sniveling, lying cheater?
Why does Harry Reid hide his shady business deals from public knowledge?
Why do the major coorporations take such care to obscure their dealings with government bureaucrats?
If these things were made known, guess who would lose power?
If you want to call it fear of losing power, okay. But they lose it because the people take it away from them. Capisce?
More gross imbecility . Enjoy your slumber, your false hopes and your false messiahs.
I wouldn’t want to wake you from your fantasy.
“If these things were made known, guess who would lose power?”
These things are known.
The truth is nobody cares as long as their wifi works and there’s unlimited cable channels.
As long as the lights turn on nobody is going to much notice or care.
There isn’t going to be a rising up of the people.
This isn’t a partisan thing either it’s the majority of both parties.
What percent of the public knows Obamacare was not intended to be about health care? Answer: very small. Because they couldn’t be honest about it.
It’s called fear of having their power taken from them by the people.

Lol. Ok, you run on out there and tell everybody. I’m sure the revolution will be firing up any minute.
Forget trying to answer. They obviously will not accept the truth that they might be saved from what is coming.
They are stuck on trading one dictator for their own chosen messiah because they are convinced this Ruling Class oligarchy ruling us via decree and subterfuge is actually afraid of the very people that the government is demonizing and holding in public contempt.
Like the Germans of 1933-45, this person actually thinks they are free.

I think that plenty of people think that the defining moment will come with a bang and a flash of light like Lexington Concord or Fort Sumter.
Not going to be that way. We won’t be suddenly thrown into camps. It will be incremental and we’re already well on our way.
We’ll be regulated to the point that everybody is a criminal for something.
We’re already bound and chained by bureaucracy.
We have the freedom to complain, and to keep making our monthly notes, and to be entertained, and to buy more stuff.
It’s the system that’s broken and corrupted.
Get the corporate money out of politics and maybe then a few individuals can make a difference.
As I’ve made plain, I want to do is vote for Ted Cruz and anyone like him. Not sure why you’re having visions of revolutions.
