It seems to me that this so-called “white privilege” is nothing more that the observation that, on average, a black child born today might have a tougher row to hoe than the white child, on average.
My reaction to this observation is first, so what? There are all kinds of differences in the circumstances of birth among children; the character of their parents being principal among them, but also including health, wealth, class, family educational level and attitude toward education; the list is long, and race- while on the list - is by no means primary let alone distinctively determinative.
My second reaction is, well, what do you propose to do about it? The task of repairing the inequities of birth is gargantuan beyond human reach, and there is nothing special about race that makes it uniquely amenable to remedial action. The past decades have been spent in a futile effort to help black children overcome perceived racial disadvantage. The results have been, if anything, counterproductive.
So now the focus seems to be changing to the notion that if we can’t help minorities succeed, at least we can take action to help promote failure among the children of the majoritarian culture.
In ought not be necessary to point out that this is sheer insanity, that’s obvious.
But I do want to point out that this is a particularly corrosive and evil brand of insanity. It ought to be ridiculed, scorned and rejected by thinking people of all races. We make room for this kind of crap in our society at our own peril.
What isn’t discussed too much is the hazing/ridicule/physical violence done by a particular group against anyone of that group trying to succeed academically.
I kept it generic because its not just one group that does it to their own members... there are a couple ethnic groups that do it.
The message needs to go out that academic achievement is color-less and any Alinsky type methods are to be ignored and any physical confrontations are to be defended against...
Question:
Has anyone asked sharpton, et al. if they will counter the hazing etc and get the message out that everyone should apply themselves to their studies and anyone trying to stop them is wrong in doing so ?
