If the clerk were armed, he would have been well within his rights to burn him down right then. And if he had, there still would have been riots, looting and the knockOUTgame perpetrated on innocents.

Yes, lethal force definitely would have been warranted, as any reasonable person could perceive a threat to their life if someone grabs their throat.
