I am asking Freepers for help in diagnosing the mysterious illness that doctors have failed to diagnose thus far. Our 3-year-old grandson has been sick for several days with high fever, a rash that started on his face but has now spread to his entire body, loss of appetite, and now peeling skin around his eyes, nose and mouth. His fever is minimal during the day, but starts to increase in the afternoon and gets close to 103.
He has been to the doctor several times, had a strep test that came back negative, and was taken to the local children's hospital for dehydration ($400 and all they did was give him juice and crackers). They did a blood test which was normal for white blood cell count, but said he is slightly anemic.
First they thougth he had a recurrence of fifth disease, and the hospital doctors thought he might have mono.
He is finally eating a little and will drink a little juice, but he whines and cries constantly and acts like his feet hurt. His rash is very itchy most of the time, so he scratches at it, particularly around his waist.
If you have any ideas or know of any children who have something similar, please post a reply.
He has another doctor's appointment this afternoon, so we will see if they have any better answers than they have so far.
And pray for him, if you will.
Oh my, that is frightening. It amazes me how often doctors fail to make a correct diagnosis. I know they are only human, but wow.
Our grandson seesm to be on the mend now. Fever gone, rash almost gone. Thanks for your reply.
Our family is a bundle of allergies, so my daughter only uses certain detergents without fragrance, etc.
Thanks for your reply. Grandson seems to be on the mend now, and I am one relieved grandma. :-0
Thank you everyone for your thoughtful contributions, suggestions, kind words, and prayers. My grandson seems to be on the mend now. All the tests came back negative, and he has been free of fever since later the same day he went to the doctor (isn’t that always the way?). He still has a slight rash, but is active again and eating like a horse to make up for lost time.
I suppose it was a really bad case of fifth disease, but the fever still is puzzling. Who knows what kind of viruses and infectious agents are floating around now that Obama has opened up our country to thousands from the 3rd world.
BTW, while he was at the ER once, they sent in a social worker ostensibly to help get some juice into him. I wonder if the real purpose was to evaluate whether my daughter was really trying to get him to take fluids. Do you get the feeling that we are all being monitored? Guilty until we can prove ourselves innocent.
Thank you for your prayers. I hope your brother will recover completely. God bless.
Did you tell the doctors that he had strep a few weeks ago?
If the strep had the phage virus then the symptoms you describe could appear after the strep infection. Be sure to tell them about the recent strep infection.
Doesn’t sound like chicken pox. I’m an expert. I’ve had it four times. It gets milder each time. I’ve had all the childhood diseases as an adult. Mumps were the worst. This child’s illness sounds like scarlet fever.
Yes, it was the same doctor, so they knew. All the tests done recently came back negative. I am thankful he seems to be fine now.
Thank you for your help. I appreciate the kindness and concern Freepers have shown.
