It was a World Airways DC 10 which skidded to stop just into over the water, and the plane separated at the nose. he cockpit and first few rows fell into the water while the rest of the craft floated. IIRC the back of the plane was still on dry land.
At first they said there were no casualties. Then someone said “When I got on I was in the second row, but when I got off I was in the front row.”
There was a rumor that Walter and Leo just got off the plane and hid out for the insurance money. It is hard to believe if they were in their seats that they would not have been found eventually, but they haven’t, after more than 30 years.
