Mr. Zimmerman, in his role as captain of the Neighborhood Watch and as a homeowner, resident, citizen and taxpayer, was well within his rights to observe and report on a suspicious person, especially with hundreds of break-ins, burglaries and other crimes committed within the past few years in his community.
Of course Zimmerman was within his rights. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t being creepy. Zimmerman was just some dude as far as Martin was concerned. It’s not like Zimmerman had a badge or some formal ID. Although I’m still not convinced Martin was doing anything truly suspicious, I agree that Martin was ultimately in the wrong when he attacked Zimmerman. With that said, I will never think of Zimmerman as anything more than an overzealous cop want-to-be who’s lack of training got him way too deep into a situation he could not handle.
