I had never experienced true segregation until I ended up attending an Ivy League university. Since I came in as a transfer, the dean of admissions gave the transfer students a special tour of the campus after we arrived. When we got to the main dining hall (many of the houses had their own dining facilities), I was shocked to find that the black students were all eating in one room and the other students in another. When I mumbled something about never seeing that before, the dean proceeded to tell us defensively that the black students had demanded their own eating facilities, as well as their own all-black dormitories.
Did they have their own drinking fountains?
Go to any Ivy football game. Before the game the white families are all tailgating. After the game, on the other side of the stadium, you’ll find all the black students, grouped together partying. Not whites. All blacks.
