I can see it now:

Teacher: "..and Captain Smellford was the highest ranking known Gay in General Washington's Army."

Kid: "So he was right up there with Washington then?"

Teacher: "Well no...he was actually a lower grade officer, probably due to his sexual preference."

Kid: "Oh...but who was this General Washington guy?...wasn't he in charge?"

Teacher: "We don't have time to go over Washington's contributions to the revolution...now...did any of you know that Harriett Tubman's cousin was a Lesbian?"
