Those were portrayed that way as exotic because of a lot of novels written in the late 1800’s portrayed the middle east as an exotic land that you had to spend weeks to get to....

Places where you had romatisised Harems and the rest of the world never got to exactly see what a wretched pit it really was... all they read about was the Harems and the rich sultan class... ie. the Decadence that punctuated the end of the Ottoman empire that led to it’s eventual downfall...
