an incident similar to the Kmart Incident in the article happened to me at a local “convenience...store”....
A clerk one time at a FedEx insisted that a shipment to New Mexico would be an international shipment.
The indignant claim of being an educated person brings certain demographics to mind - those who dominate the “civil service” sector.
I have a similar story, occurred at Starbucks.
I would love to see her cash register balance at the end of the day.
I have an uncle who is a cop and was on duty and pulled into a MickeyD’s a few years back and ordered two cheeseburgers, a small order of french fries and a water. The girl taking the order in a very serious tone asks “Sir do you want cheese on those cheeseburgers?”
My wife pulled into a sonic drive in and ordered her lunch and the total was $7.94. She hands the waitress a $20 and .94 cents, total $20.94. The girl hands her back a $10 and says thanks! My wife says what? Oh the girl replies I owe you another dollar, sorry and quickly hands her a dollar and starts to walk away. My wife says you need to keep coming with those dollars sister and the girl hands her another one and again starts to walk away and my wife says whoa we are not done here.
Finally my wife says I gave you $20.94 the total was $7.94, you owe me $13.00, hand over another dollar and we are even. The car hop reluctantly handed over the dollar. My wife couldn’t decide if she was that stupid or just a plain ole thief. By the end of the incident she was leaning thief...
As I was driving into work today, our local talk radio host was talking about a family member who was visiting him here (Albuquerque) from Arizona. The family member went to use a credit card and it was denied. When he called customer service, they said it was flagged because he was traveling outside the United States (I'm guessing the rep said that, but that it may have actually been flagged due to the location used, i.e. common fraud location - happened to my folks when they used a credit-card only fuel station in California years back). He said the brother stated over the phone that it was "New" Mexico, not "Mexico".
Homer Simpson once queried “There’s a NEW Mexico now??”
Or entitled. Many folks tip the carhops at Sonic, so she may have come to expect it.

I had a similar experience at Subway. I got $14.00 change back from a $10.00 bill. I sat down and ate and then settled it with the manager. It was slow and I saw the girl in the back Texting away.
I lived in New Mexico for 12 years, and I heard a lot of "you're not in the United States" stories from people. That's why the license plates say "New Mexico USA."

What makes liberals dangerous is not WHAT they know, but WHAT they THINK they know...
Wisdom is Knowing what you do not....
actually that's a Yogism. Yogi Berra said that almost word for word.
