Look at Barry’s statement from today:
“There’s also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests, or to throw protestors in jail....”
The man is angling for an expansion of the ahem ‘protests’.

I don't think so. Immediately before the statement you quoted, he said:
"There is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting."
He was calling for both sides to calm the h*ll down.
