McDonald’s Replacing Cashiers With Machines?

McDonald’s employees who picketed for a better living wage (whatever that means) may come to regret that decision.... a McDonald’s in Illinois replaced their cashiers with machines. The machines appear to be the cousins of the ones found in grocery stores, big box stores, and CVS that allow customers to complete transactions...

This is all basic economics, really. As costs of labor increase the added cost must be offset. In order to satisfy operating costs, produce a product consumers want to purchase, and still turn a profit, it’s perfectly reasonable for a company like McDonald’s to look for cost-cutting alternatives....

Robot makers must be loving the recent NLRB ruling, as well, which held McDonald’s parent corporation liable for franchisee employment practices. Can a kiosk file an employment grievance?

Don’t kid yourself, they won’t expect that their customers will be able to read.

Their cash registers already have icons.

Is it just ignorance, or are they perhaps addicted?

Have you considered it might be the Price?

In 1956, in San Francisco I could buy a New York steak, baked potato, salad and roll for $1.09, for that same $1.09 I could buy 10 hamburgers.

I have no clue what happened to those $1.09 steak houses, or the all you can eat Prime Rib joints, for $2.49, guess no one like them.

I use them every chance I get. It least I don’t have to wait in those long lines.

“Is it just ignorance, or are they perhaps addicted?”

Both actually. Carbs and sugar in particular are actually addicting in the sense that over-consumption causes a rapid spike and the drop in blood sugar, with the latter triggering premature hunger.

And the ignorance stems from the general degeneration of the intellectual capability of the average citizen in our nation due to government schools, government nannyism, and government propaganda, such as the current food “pyramid” that is politically constructed to be anti-meat and anti-animal protein.

Well, I think parents need to do a better job of educating their kids about nutrition, exercise and fitness. Too many people never learn how to take care of themselves. There is no need to be fat, weak or unfit.

I use them all the time, but my old man ran a grocery store when I was a kid so I know how to bag, scan (which we didn’t have back then), and even look up the food. But that’s just me.

The machine won’t be disrespectful and flippant. Nor will it have facial piercings and chew gum.

Yes they will. at least they used to. I usually pay for it as two quarter pounders with cheese. That seems to keep everyone happy. Haven’t done this in a while though. Have to watch my adorable figure don’t you know.

I’m guessing you have to press buttons for your order. This might be a response to barely skilled counter people who have trouble, for example, knowing you did not mean Chicken McNuggets when you asked for McChicken sandwiches.

This might also be an excuse to riot and loot when Shakeem, with his hat on sideways and pants around his thighs, wants to order an "eggamuffa" but can't find it on the robotic menu.

That one pizza machine holds enough to make a hundred 10 inch pizzas. That employee has time to bus the tables, mop the floors and clean the bathrooms before refills.

And that "employee" is probably the (salaried) manager or owner/operator.

As mentioned up thread, people are going to make a killing on this machine at concerts and conventions. Good on them, too. May they prosper!

But. There is always a but. If they become widespread, where will the starter jobs be? No one wants to work in a pizza place forever, but it does give kids the good habits of work ethic and earning their own way.
