In a Salon review Sunday of Ralph Naders spring 2014 book Unstoppable, Bill Curry, former White House counselor to President Bill Clinton, takes Democrats led by Clinton and Barack Obama to task for making their party an indentured servant of Wall Street and gifting economic populism to the right.
Curry endorses Naders view that the present is ripe for a populist revival. Looking back to the Gilded Age, when [p]owerful trusts were turning farmers into wage slaves and the worlds greatest democracy into just another corrupt oligarchy, he notes that agrarian populists busted price fixing railroads and granaries, fought for rural free deliver and established cooperative banks that still provide a third of all credit to rural America. Coming to the present, he writes:
Parallels to our own time could hardly be clearer. Like invasive species destroying the biodiversity of a pond, todays global trusts swallow up everything smaller than themselves. The rules of global trade make organizing for higher wages next to impossible in developed and undeveloped countries alike. Fights for net neutrality and public Wi-Fi are exactly like the fight for rural free delivery. Small businesses are as starved for credit as small farmers ever were. PACs are our Tammany Hall. Whats missing is a powerful, independent reform movement.
Inaction from Democrats on these fronts has given populism to Republicans and their further-right colleagues. Tea party Sen. Rand Paul is a greater champion of privacy and opponent of empire than any of his liberal colleagues, Curry writes. And the tea party as a whole has railed loudest against big banks and corporate corruption.
And in response to the crisis, Democrats have had their eyes on the wrong solution, Curry explains:
Liberals have spent the intervening years debating macroeconomic theory but macroeconomics cant fathom this crisis.

I think all parties have lost their soul.
Unfortunately, it has come to the point that politicians now put party and greed far ahead of the Country. It's past time for the [taxpaying] citizens get some payback - with extreme prejudice!
Speaker Blank Check Boehner has convinced most voters in the Public and US House of Representatives that NOTHING CAN BE DONE to punish B. Hussein Obama for violating the US Constitution unless he is removed from Office by the US Senate.
IOW, Speaker Boehner, by doing nothing, Boehner violates his unique Constitutional Duty to Control the Purse or Impeach Obama, and passes the buck to a Democrat-controlled US Senate that will never Remove Obama from Office.
Obama knows that as long as Boehner stays in as Speaker, then Obama has permission do whatever he wants to do, with no fear of punishment.
Boehner as Speaker is ESSENTIAL to permitting Obama to violate the US Constitution on a near daily basis.
Boehner is the best Speaker of the House that the Democrat Party has ever had.
Removal from Office can only come from the US Senate, and ONLY if the US House Impeaches BEFORE the US Senate even considers whether or not to bring an Impeachment to the Floor of the US Senate.
BTW, stupid people are those people who are incapable of learning, and Speaker Boehner and all those who refuse to use the Checks and Balances found in the US Constitution are TRULY STUPID, especially the Republican Member supporters of Boehner as Speaker in the US House of Representatives.
Force Boehner to resign as Speaker, and THEN Impeach Obama with New House Speaker Louis Gomert, Jim Jordan or Trey Gowdy.
Do nothing, and US Voters may find no EFFECTIVE reason to vote for a do nothing Republican slate of Candidates in November, 2014.
BTW, BTW, just what is the difference between a do-nothing Republican Politician who always caves-in to his Democrat betters, and an Obama Democrat Politician?
The UniParty has no soul.
you actually have to posess something to lose it.
Can’t lose something you never had...
When did the Democrats have a soul?
