a post on the official Twitter account of the Donetsk People’s Republic, and later removed, claimed that the separatists earlier had seized a missile system called Buk from the Ukrainian army, capable of downing a jet at that altitude.
“dnrpress: self-propelled Buk surface-to-air missile systems have been seized by the DNR from (Ukrainian) surface-to-air missile regiment A1402,’’ said the post.
Since the Russian Air Force seems to have shot down a Ukrainian MIG three days ago, I was convinced the Russians did this but maybe it WAS their proxy force in Donetsk after all
Quite a bit of the old soviet gear was built in the Ukraine. The Ukranians even kept the old Soviet nukes on their territory, at least for awhile.
The source of the story, if you track it far enough, is Russian state controlled media, with no photographs, evidence, nothing. It is common practice for the Russkies to claim something was "captured," before sending it in. The Ukrainians themselves say no such system was ever captured.
