That’s a most powerful account by Hemingway and exactly on the mark. He should have gotten a medal for it instead of being admonished but I don’t believe he cared, he accomplished what he set out to do.
Sadly there are still some people in charge that don’t get it and this current administration is loaded with them.

Roosevelt used them to get elected, then cast them aside. He could have cared less what happened to them once they were out of the way, down south in Florida swamps where they couldn’t embarass him and his “New Deal”. Democrats, the media and academia all worshipped FDR before there was an Obama to swoon over.
It’s sickening.
