What is the point of being king when everyone else is living like a king too?
In a world where everyone has an abundance of resources and you have more abundance than the others, it's not a much fun as a world where only you have abundance and everyone else is a peasant.
Which reminds me of an old joke:
Shortly after the Soviet Revolution, two acquaintances from before the war ran into each other in Moscow and went to a restaurant for a bite to eat. The the food was both scarce and awful. But Ivan said, "See here, Viktor, you are the son of a prince and I am the son of a peasant who worked for your father -- but thanks to the glorious revolution, here we are dining together in public!"
After dinner they went to a bar and knocked back a few beers and vodkas. Again, Ivan rejoiced, "Look at us, Viktor! I am the son of a peasant and you are the son of a prince -- but thanks to the glorious revolution, here we are drinking together as equals!"
Soon the alcohol took its toll, and they made their way to the men's room. Ivan, really drunk and loud, could not help but revel in the glorious revolution once again. "Comrade Viktor!" he exulted. "I am the son of a peasant and you are the son of a prince, but my stream sounds like the mighty Volga River rushing over the rocks, and from you I hear nothing!"
"Hmph!" Viktor replied. "That's because I am peeing on your coat, peasant!"
Or to quote W.S. Gilbert:
“When everyone is somebody, then no one’s anybody!”
When I was in Panama more than 20 years ago, I had a conversation with one of the upper class Panamanians.
I suggested that they push for free trade with the United States, as it would bring increased prosperity to all Panamanians.
She looked at me (she spoke excellent English) and said, in all sincerity; “Then were would we get our maids from?”
