I was taught that the political spectrum was not a straight line too, but really a circle. The far left extremists is basically the same as the far right extremists and they are at the same position on the circle. An example; Stalin and communism is the same position as Hitler and National Socialism. Or, Harry Reid and Obammer are in the same position as Hitler and Stalin's Socialism. The Republicans and d'Rats are probably some where along the circle depending on your political viewpoint.

If that where true, then the position more or less halfway between the two would be . . . what? Some sort of compromise of the two that are, in fact, the same? What other dimension moves you from those two labels for the same point?

The polar opposite of both of those collectivist positions is anarchy, not some compromise between them. If full anarchy is zero, and full collectivism/totalitarianism/socialism/fascism is ten, then I would put the libertarians at about 3, the establishment Republicans at about 7, the Democrats at about 8, and the government described by US Constitution at about 5 - a great place to be.
