Dispelling Myths: The Case for Immigration Reform [Enjoy your made-in-America ZOT, troll]
Red Dirt Report ^ | 12/27/2013 | Brian Woodward

Posted on 12/27/2013 11:24:17 AM PST by honestabe010

In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senate’s immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...

Highlights from Article:

- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.

- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.

- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.

- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.

- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, “The number of jobs in the United States is not static. It’s fluid, which is how we want it to be.”

You’re welcome.
The same maps refresh every few hours, so even if I miss a day they are still valid the following day.

I really, really love this movie, but it was kind of an unheard of gem when it came out, might not be to everyone's taste...it's a story about Gilbert and Sullivan creating their musical The Mikado. It has one totally superfluous nudity scene the movie could have done without, just blink, the rest is superb IMO...Topsy Turvy

Where do you buy gloves? I’ll bet you play one mean piano.

A special, Darks-designed piano, with fangs.

Kathleen had a difficult night, but at least she's old enough for Vick's Vapo-Rub. For a while, nobody was selling cough medicine for babies; now they are, but it's just chamomile and honey! Not spending $6 for a couple of ounces of that!

The piano rewards good melodies with purring.
It punishes bad playing by chasing, nibbling, and attempting to devour bad pianists.

*snif*

It’s no fun without others for warmth and comfort...

Good morning! It’s 39 and sunny, and I was going to try and go to church this morning, but put in a miserable night last night.

So I will go in and lie down in an hour or two, and see how that makes me feel. I’m sure not going anywhere!

This is a stock photo from Ixquick, and the tractor is a smaller model than Bryan got, but you get the idea.
The mower deck is over on the left, and the snow thrower is ready to throw.

And if you sing off key, the piano snaps at your fingers.

30s and raining here. Our choir is singing at 1:00, and then I have to take Tom at 4:30 to be one of the Three Kings.

"I have closed the portal to the evil dimension of rocking chairs!"

Odd that you should mention that. I've been exploring The Evil Dimension of Timmy. Rocking chairs are mentioned.

Wade looked somberly at his two sons. His two normal sons.

His two troublesome sons. The typical boys, as compared to Timmy, who was never any trouble.

He chuckled inwardly. Dexter and Oliver looked at each other.

“Boys, you’re missing something, and it’s something important. You two would make any father proud, but I have three sons. I know you have a thing about Timmy, but I think it’s misplaced.”

He grew thoughtful, “Timmy’s a good lad, but he’s not all there.” He looked at them. “That’s a joke. You can laugh now.”

Dexter and Oliver made a pathetic, insincere kind of chuckle.

Wade stared at them. “Anyway, I’m getting older. It’s something to think about. You’re getting older too. Soon you’ll be in and out of High School, and maybe college if you’re up for that. I’ll be sitting around in a rocking chair, waiting for people to come visit me.”

“Of course, Timmy will be around too. The question is, will he be getting older like the rest of us? It’s still a little early to tell, but we have clues. Timmy never needs a haircut. He never needs to get his fingernails trimmed. He probably will never need to shave, but you two aren’t too far away from that.”

“Timmy may be unchanged when I am in my rocking chair. There’s a possibility he may be unchanged when you are in your rocking chairs! Now, think about that for a minute.”

“I know you think that you don’t have room in your lives for someone like Timmy. But I’m telling you, if you’re smart, you don’t want to keep him out of it.”

Wade picked up his beer can, holding it as he looked at them. “Are you smart?”

Oliver said, “Dad, if this is about the choir practice …”

“Don’t.” Wade said. Oliver gulped.

“You three boys are like these beers. You look the same, but Timmy’s container makes a different sound.” He tapped the can, and it made a tinny, empty sound.

“You two are full of it.” He continued. “You’re full of yourselves and your own self-importance. That’s why you make a different sound than he does. You’re not so different from Tim, and for a good reason, you all started from the same material. But Timmy has room for love, and you don’t because you’re full of something else.”

“Now I want you to be nicer to Timmy, and be nicer to his friends, too. You are his friends, you know. Just ask him. He loves you.” He drew a deep breath. “His problem is he can’t be like you. And I know you can’t be like him either. But you can be his brothers. Give him help when he needs it, and let him be a part of your lives too. You’ll both be a whole lot richer for it.”

He looked at them.

They looked at each other.

“Anything to say?” Wade asked.

“Dad, you’re right. We’ll …”

“Don’t say it if you don’t mean it,” Wade said.

“We’ll be thinking about what you said.” Dexter went on. “Timmy seems to have found some interests to keep him busy, so maybe he won’t be looking so … vulnerable, to us … I think that’s what triggers our … attitude.”

“Being bullies?”

They squirmed. “Not intentionally, no.”

“All right. If you can recognize that you’re stepping over the line, that means at least that you know where the line is. Keep what I said in mind. I don’t want to have to make up all this crap again, because it might come out different next time, and I don’t want you boys to be confused. Go on. Go play, and have fun. But be nice.”

Bump for later. Time to bundle up and head out. I think I’ll wear my knockoff Ugg-boots for the trip, and put on my Real Shoes when I get there.

It may be a nice day here, but I’ve got the S-L-O-W-S again. I’m sure it was from my wicked night.

At any rate, I’m sure nothing exciting is going to happen, so I will soon go curl up with a good book.

Bet you were surprised to discover that today’s sermon was being delivered by beer-drinking Wade, weren’t you?

Not a bad one, all things considered. “Go play, and have fun. But be nice.”
