Dispelling Myths: The Case for Immigration Reform [Enjoy your made-in-America ZOT, troll]
Red Dirt Report ^ | 12/27/2013 | Brian Woodward

Posted on 12/27/2013 11:24:17 AM PST by honestabe010

In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senate’s immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...

Highlights from Article:

- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.

- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.

- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.

- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.

- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, “The number of jobs in the United States is not static. It’s fluid, which is how we want it to be.”

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean someone isn’t looking to eat you any minute now.

I went out to the mailbox three times yesterday, and the last time was 1530. I went out this morning, and the mail was finally up...and I got a card!

So I will mail off the beads today. They are in Priority boxes, so they should be there by Monday. You can look at the inventory and have Asuncion look at it and we can discuss the cost/pricing. Minus what you’ve already sent.

What I already sent was a present ;-).

It’s supposed to get above 50 today. We can go to the library.

As soon as I get the card loaded (got one when I cashed the check,) I’ll put the postage on the boxes and drop them off on my way to the doctor.

I was born in the Year of the Horse. Maybe this lunar year will go better for me than the previous one.

That is interesting that it wouldn’t boot from a CD/DVD. Almost all Linux distro’s will do that. Well, if your computer is old enough you might try a smaller distro first.

A few distro’s are too big to install into RAM if you don’t have a lot of RAM. If you have spare blank CD’s around burn some smaller ones like Puppy Linux or Tiny Core Linux www.tinycorelinux.net (latest version is 72MB)
They don’t come with a lot of add-on software. (You can always download LibreOffice and stuff later)

I run Ubuntu 12.04 (I see no good reason to install a newer version yet)

I deleted some programs I wasn’t using, and somehow deleted the program that stabilized the pointer. Now it’s all over the place. How do I go back in to fix it? What do I look for?

My appointment with gastroenterology went swimmingly well, she says, tongue-in-cheek.

They won’t schedule a day for the upper and lower GI’s until I see the cardiologist and have the stress test which is Feb 17.

In the meantime, I’ve done all the right things (of course, I did!) and all I need now is someone who will go with me for the four hour block around the GI test. I will be, blessedly, “out of it” for the duration, so they will do both tests at the same time. Talk about invasive...

The boxes are on their ways to you, most probably at the main post office by the air port. Monday looks like a good day for delivery!
