In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senates immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...
Highlights from Article:
- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.
- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.
- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.
- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.
- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, The number of jobs in the United States is not static. Its fluid, which is how we want it to be.

You wouldn’t need a big vacuum for one of those.
Speaking of which, I’m about to load up some “helpers” and go to A-Plus Vacuums to get a belt for the Dyson.
I have to go get some ibuprofen. When I get back, I’ll try to call the dental school.
Unnngh...
Yes Sarge, I can officially confirm that it is Snowing...from a westerly direction. Over.
The year 1947 was the year of the great freeze.
Nothing could move for months, the power stations simply ran out of coal.
Shops ran out of food ,water and emergency rations where moved around the country by the Army.
It wasn’t socialism, just a very cold dose of Al Gore on a country worn out by 6 years of squabbling with Jerry.
It could have been handled better, but there was still a shortage of petrol/gas disabling any use of heavy equipment.
Sure can’t, you stay safe there ‘Face.
Gas was ‘Towngas’ in that era.
A disgusting smelly product created from...coal.
The Rail network was frozen solid and wornout, the canals and rivers frozen solid.
No coal, no Gas. Mad huh.
Very interesting. I didn’t know ‘47 was a particularly bad winter.
Legendary ,along with 62.
Plus the Michael Fish Hurricane of 87...that’s a bit of humour for another time. :)
Did you ever have to put coins into the gas meter, like it was a vending machine? I’ve read about that.
Not personally, but pay as you go Electric and Gas are still popular if you have no credit rating.
However it is 25% more expensive.
The payment is now done mostly by a programmed key, you pay at the local newsagents or post office.
Coin opperation does still exist, but is rare.
Holycow! The People vs. Winter elicited so many exclamations—I guess I’ve forgotten how severe winter can be. (Living in the desert for 33 years tends to do that, probably.)
I thought you replaced the Dyson with a Riccar?
I keep the Dyson upstairs. I broke the belt a few weeks ago, vacuuming the byos’ room. Over $10 for the new belt. Phooey!
Dang! $10 for a new belt?? Robbery!
I’m wishing I could just go to bed and stay there today. I’m cold and achy and I want a lot of chocolate!
No more transfusions! The doctor’s office called to tell me to take iron pills. I will, on payday...
I’m still a little puny, but I’ll take any news that’s even partially good. :o]
Best wishes for the iron. It will make you constipated ...
ON the plus side, I got a fine turquoise item in the mail today. Speedy package bunneh! I hope it all looks as good as you say with the black and white dress. If not, maybe I can make a trip upscale to the Junior League Resale Shop.
I took a nap, after reading most of a chapter to the boys. Then I put the pork in the oven.
Rocco the Vacuum-guy is going to Las Vegas next month for the Vacuum-Merchants’ Jamboree. Do you think the venue really cleans up before that starts?
Ah! Good! The fine turquoise item is cashmere and silk, so it is light but will also be warm. I hope you have pics taken of you and DP so I can see how stuning you look!
I think the iron might be the key to my other problem, at least in the beginning. The rest, I can deal with! Anyway, I would rather not have another transfusion. Of course, after a week on iron, I may have an entirely new perspective on the subject. I will also understand why a “crockagator” is such a mean, miserable animal...
