Dispelling Myths: The Case for Immigration Reform [Enjoy your made-in-America ZOT, troll]
Red Dirt Report ^ | 12/27/2013 | Brian Woodward

Posted on 12/27/2013 11:24:17 AM PST by honestabe010

In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senate’s immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...

Highlights from Article:

- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.

- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.

- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.

- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.

- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, “The number of jobs in the United States is not static. It’s fluid, which is how we want it to be.”

We have sharks, here. Honest. A shark reef. Go figger. I don’t want to see it. I saw the lions and that was enough.

My favorite place to go is Treasure Island, just to watch the war ships fight. One ship gets sunk and the captain goes down with the ship. The play lasts about 15 minutes.

The motion ride at the Excalibur is good, too. As for the other themed casinos, I haven’t been. *meh*

Just got off the phone with my uncle. He’s going to ship the RX7 up here, and then we’ll ... I don’t know what. DP is saying maybe he’ll drive it to work. Bill and Tom can’t drive it, but Elen can if she learns to drive a manual transmission.

A story from the Steppe. I apologize if you have seen me post it before, but it is a favorite story I read somewhere:

A Great Khan conquered many neighboring tribes and took many prisoners, goods, cattle and glory. He was very vain, so the Great Khan would use captured princes to pull his yurt.

One day, while rolling across the tundra, he noticed one of the princes pulling his yurt watching the wheels rotate round and round. He asked the prince “why are you watching the wheels go round and round?” The prince answered “I was noticing that what was once on top, goes to the bottom and gets covered in mud and shit.”

From that day forward, the Great Khan no longer used princes to pull his yurt.

null and void
Proving that The Great Khan of the Mongols is far wiser than The Great Con of the Mongrels...

Some whales have really big teeth.

They put in a big shark display at the Oklahoma State Aquarium.

I’ve never driven a car with a manual that worked. I should probably learn how.

I haven’t driven a manual since the 1990s. I hope it’s like riding a bicycle and you don’t forget. Ern’s meticulous about cars: the transmission will work just fine. It’s a five-speed with a heck of a kick.

The last manual I drove was in a Toyota van and it wouldn’t shift out of second gear.
I’ll probably just want a weekend of practice. I have a concert to go to next month down there anyway.

He said “a few weeks,” which could be next month or could be later. They’re going to Florida before the end of February, so maybe it will be on the road before that.

Do they pick-up garbage tomorrow or not?

As to manual transmissions just stay out of San Francisco and like geographically challenging place.

Just in case you were worried...

Waste collection does not occur on the following holidays:

New Years Day
Memorial Day
4th of July
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

If a holiday falls on a weekday, collection will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.

Tuesday is our pickup day, but it will be Wednesday if they skip Monday pickup. I don’t think they will.

It’s flat where we live, but I’ve driven a manual in hilly places, too. You use your brake, and it helps to have wide feet.

I’ve been using a clutch about every week for the last forty or fifty years.

The truck I drive to work every day is a five-speed manual transmission.

Stop by for a lesson on your way south if you want to.

(”What! How OLD are you?” — Older Than Dirt, of course. But you knew that already.)

How old is Bob? Older than me! I can teach you to drive the manual: I taught your dad.

It can’t be that difficult. I just haven’t done it more than once.
