In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senate’s immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...

- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”
- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.
- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.
- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.
- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.
- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, “The number of jobs in the United States is not static. It’s fluid, which is how we want it to be.”

Back from the doctor. She has ordered an upper and lower GI for me, neither of which I’m looking forward to.
I came home to find the tea kettle almost dry and a HUGH build-up of lime and calcium on the sides and the rim. *sigh*
The upside of the morning is that I have been invited to lunch. YAY!!
I hope you have an excellent lunch! Tom heated milk in our tea kettle and we had to get a new one.

Lunch was cheap...Arby’s Roast Beast French dip with Swiss cheese. I liked it better with just Arby’s Horsy Sauce, but then, I like all roast beef with horse radish. It was a good sandwich!
I’m trying to decide if cleaning the teakettle is worth saving or if I’m better off just going to the thrift store to find another.

I have plenty of vinegar. I use it with baking soda in the kitchen drain, and use cider vinegar to rinse my hair with. It’s also good to clean windows with. :o]

Salad? Maybe. But at the moment, I don’t want to fix anything. I just want to order it already made. Lazy is what I am...
Chemically speaking, a bit of warm vinegar ought to react against that scale in the teakettle.
Then I will try that before I chuck the teakettle. I like it because it matches my kitchen day-core.
And with that, I’m off to bed. It has been a long day.
Next time you want to use this method of humidifying your air, consider using distilled water. It won’t hurt to check prices and compare.
Hi. I just spent two hours on the phone with DP’s stepmother. His father had a lobe removed due to lung cancer yesterday, and she wanted to vent about all she’s been through with his health the last six months, to somebody who wouldn’t take it wrong. Apparently some of his siblings haven’t accepted her, after nearly 30 years, but she was his father’s wife when I met her, and we’ve always treated her as the only wife he’s got, and our children’s grandmother.
The doctor thinks he got all the cancer out, but it’s hard to tell, with the damage from 64 years of smoking.
Some people are remarkably immune to the effects of smoking, or seem to be.
But a “test to destruction” is a bit extreme.
My hopes for good results from the operation. “Step”mom or not, that’s his only Dad.
