In real life, most people work in order to get paid, to get the means by which they can accomplish whatever personal goals they have. If you take away the reward of "pay", then you take away the incentive to work. If I get paid the same as somebody who is half as productive as me, then I will work half the day, and socialize the other half, and still get my quota done.
imho, the main problem plaguing the altruists is a basic misunderstanding of the human condition - that is, that mankind has a "sin nature". If you miss this most basic aspect of human nature, all social policies are doomed to failure.
It is not society that corrupts and defines pristine mankind. Rather it is the amalgamation of sinful souls - and their efforts to transcend their sin nature (or not) - that defines society.
